Cataract Surgery For The Soul

If you’ve ever had cataract surgery, as I did, you will discover a clarity of vision you had lost (or perhaps never fully had). You will see colors with a brightness and vibrancy you had forgotten. And you will be able to safely drive at night—no joke!

In cataract eye surgery, a clouded lens is removed and replaced with a new, clear lens. And the new lens may correct vision issues from birth. Now, where I once wore progressive eyeglasses, I now have almost full vision without any eyeglasses.

St. Paul (Saul) had a type of cataract surgery, cataract surgery of his soul.

Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”

Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized…

Acts:17-18

Cataract eye surgery was a decision I made. Cataract surgery for my soul is also a decision I can made, and I try to make it daily. It is a decision of surrender, faith, trust, and belief. So can you.

By God’s grace, I am made aware of the things in life that are clouded, out of focus, or obscured. I can enter His operating room at any time and He is prepared to treat me immediately.

My vision is not perfect and it never will be. Some residue from the surgery has an annoying way of obscuring sight. It will always be with me, just as I will always be in need of continual grace. But I can drive at night, meaning the path to an abundant life with Christ is before me, unclouded. The surgery was successful.
