What Can Anyone Do To Me?

What Can Anyone Do To Me?
"The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.
What can anyone do to me?"
(Hebrews 13:6)
The war in Ukraine continues. Seventeen children were gunned down during a church service. Drugs continue to kill. Natural disasters happen. Accidents happen. It seems that a lot of bad things can happen to me.
How can we believe what the writer of Hebrews is saying?
As in all the Bible, understanding comes from context, the context of people living in a broken world being sought after by a loving God. It is this love that cannot be denied, altered, or prevented by anyone or even by ourselves.
It is the love that sometimes calms the storm and at other times lets the storm rage and calms the child. It is transformative love that changes situations and people in what seems to be impossible ways. It is an ever-present love, an all-powerful love, and a never-ending love. It the midst of chaos, pain, discouragement—all the products of a broken world—God’s Spirit is the companion who journeys with us.
So, while much can be done to us, above it all our relationship with God—our greatest treasure—is assured, unbreakable, and forever.
