Life forces us to run and it is critical to run fully and toward the right goal. In Greek, the word “run” means to exert one’s self and strive hard. It can denote extreme peril, which requires the exertion of all one’s effort to overcome. This sounds like life—a life of peril, of overcoming.

So, we do not run in vain when we strive hard to God’s heavenly calling.

I wanted to be sure I was not running and had not been running my race in vain.” - Galatians 2:2 NIV

I run toward the goal, so I can win the prize of being called to heaven. This is the prize God offers because of what Christ Jesus has done.-Philippians 3:14 CEV
