In today’s culture, a halfway house is a living environment that supports recovery for people transitioning out of drug and/or alcohol rehab, mental health treatment, and/or incarceration. The concept, however, may have broader application to any individual who is transitioning from one circumstance to another and it need not be extreme. It is in this context that we can all be Christ’s halfway house when we show empathy, support, compassion, respect and more—such simple, non-costly gestures—to those who need a momentary break or encouragement to keep moving forward, step-by-step.
