Thought For an abundant day

Mercy

The great irony of God’s mercy is that, as such a grand, noble, and profound reality, it is easy to dismiss, ignore, and minimize it. To do so, however, robs us of great comfort, nourishment, and riches.

Charles Spurgeon reminds us that God’s mercy is infinite, just as God is infinite, and can fortify us in times of trouble, temptation, and when sinking. (Morning and Evening, the morning of August 17)

Psalm 52:8 embellishes the idea of mercy by declaring “But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God: I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever.” Different translations use the words lovingkindness, faithful love, and constant, steadfast and eternal love.

The metaphor of the olive tree is important to recognize. Olive trees are mentioned throughout scripture. They are used symbolically as peace, prosperity, beauty and the relationship between God and His people. The roots of the olive tree grow deep and they surprisingly thrive in the desert. Its importance dates even before Ancient Greek mythology and is referred to as the tree of life, because of the white pigeon that returned to Noah's ark after the flood had an olive branch in its mouth.

Grasp onto this unlimited and unmerited source God’s loving kindness.

my journey begins daily

today i will...

I begin each day with short reflections based on Study, Prayer, and a commitment to Action (my Bible SPA).

What amazes me is the ease, breadth and depth of these thoughts that can only come from the Holy Spirit. I conclude each reflection with a mention of God’s altar because it is at God’s altar where blessings are bestowed, gratitude is offered, and wholeness is made. And God’s altar may be found anywhere and everywhere, and especially in my heart.
