The Surpassing Power Of Weakness
How do we exceed our limits, go beyond what we believe is possible, reach the unreachable? The secret is to extend our limits, believe in the impossible, and outstretch the reachable. Once we have exhausted our capabilities it is time to grasp onto the infinite capabilities of God, for “God can do nothing for me until I get to the limit of the possible” (Chambers, My Utmost for His Highest, May 24).
The Apostle Paul knew this intimately when he quotes Jesus saying to him in a vision, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness”(2 Corinthians 12:9). This means that God’s power is most fully revealed and effective when we acknowledge our own limitations and rely on Him for strength.
Weakness is a limitation. Theis is where Paul’s statement is most powerful. Paul had prayed to Jesus to remove his “thorn.” We do not know what this thorn was, but it tormented Paul. Instead of removing the thorn, Jesus gave Paul more of himself. This is what the NIV Grace and Truth Study Bible says:
“God’s solution to earthly suffering is not to take away the trials to make earth a paradise. His answer to suffering is to give us more of himself and his all-sufficient grace so that we have enough to endure the trials. This response totally changes Paul’s perspective. He goes from praying for the removal of the weakness to boasting in the weakness (v. 10).”
Rick Warren talks about the necessity of God’s power to live a fulfilled life, an abundant life that falls outside of our power. He quotes Ephesians 3:20, “Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think” (New Living Translation). We gain God’s power through prayer, taking risks for God’s kingdom, and the presence of the Holy Spirit.
Weaknesses—limitations—are everywhere. For a time, we may overcome limits and minimize weaknesses, but only for a time. When we reach the ultimate limit where nothing we can do can make a difference, it is time to humbly—boastfully—call upon God’s surpassing power to do for us what we cannot do for ourselves.
